Structural Adjustment and Privatization of the East German Economy

Abstract

Since October 3, 1990, West and East Germany are united, after having been politically separated for more than four decades by the iron curtain. In some respects — particularly from an economic point of view — another date might be even more important — since July 1, 1990, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) are closely connected by an economic, monetary and social union. Although the State Treaty establishing the intra-German union represented but an intermediate step towards complete political unification, it heralded the end of the socialist “command economy” and its transition into the kind of “social market economy” established in West Germany more than forty years ago.
