Abstract
The current success of clinical solid organ transplantation has resulted in a shortage of suitable donors; this is particularly true for intrathoracic organs. This shortage has prompted many to consider the use of nonhuman organs for transplantation in man. In order to minimize the vigorous immunological responses that have been observed in experimental xenotransplantation, investigators have studied transplantation between phylogenetically closely related animal models. This has resulted in an increased understanding of the mechanisms of rejection and has also led to the development of models in which immunomodulative strategies are tested prior to their use in human allotransplantation.
