Abstract
At the beginning of 1989, the depletion of the ozone layer is considered the most critical environmental hazard. In the meantime, soil degradation is forgotten. The first danger seems more frightening than the second; it has the charm of novelty. Soil degradation is defined as decrease of soil quality and consequently of potential productivity; it is well demonstrated by Jackson (1989).
