Den Schweregrad der Erkrankung teilt man klinisch am besten anhand folgender Begriffe ein:

Dyspnoe: subjektive Atemnot,
-
2)
Orthopnoe: Atemnot mit Einsatz der Atemhilfsmuskulatur, Zeichen der Zwerchfellermüdung (s. unter III, S. 275), Patient ist aber „hellwach“,
-
3)
Hypoventilation, Apnoe: flache, ungenügende Atmung, Schnappatmung bzw. Atemstillstand mit Somnolenz oder Bewußtlosigkeit.
