Electromagnetic Properties in the Shell Model

Having studied the nuclear wave functions obtained from the nuclear secular equation, one has a first test on a good description of the nuclear Hamiltonian (average field, residual two-body interactions, …). The study of nuclear decay rates via gamma decay is a much better test, however, of the nuclear wave functions obtained. Moreover, nuclear gamma-decay properties are some of the best indicators of nuclear spin and parity () of excited states. In this chapter we shall concentrate on the evaluation of transition rates and static moments. We do not, however, discuss a derivation of the electric and magnetic multipole operators themselves and refer the reader to (Brussaard, Glaudemans 1977) for an efficient introduction.
