ET Salts: Quasi Two-Dimensional Systems

Abstract

The second family of organic materials exhibiting superconductivity was found in ET salts, where ET represents bis-ethylenedithia-tetrathiafulvalene (alternatively abbreviated as BEDT-TTF). Its chemical structure is shown in Fig. 1.1. These compounds have quite different characteristics than the first generation of superconductors, (TMTSF)2X. That is, the ET molecules also form salts with various monovalent anions, but their compositionsare remarkably varied, as represented by (ET)mXn. However, it is fortunate that most of the ET superconductors are of the 2:1 composition ratio as (ET)2X, although their crystal structures are of a large variety. Among the ET salts, there are several quasi one-dimensional conductors, but most of them are already non-metallic at room temperature. The salts exhibiting metallic behavior down to low temperatures are mostly quasi two-dimensional.
