Zusammenfassung
Bei der Behandlung von Schwerverletzten sind 2 Begriffe zu unterscheiden:

Mehrfachverletzter, Polytrauma oder polytraumatisierter Patient („multiple injured patient”) bedeutet, daß gleichzeitig entstandene Verletzungen mehrerer Körperregionen oder Organsysteme vorliegen, die einzeln für sich oder in ihrer Kombination lebensbedrohlich sind.

Der Begriff Schwerverletzter oder auch „Barytrauma“ kennzeichnet eine schwerwiegende Einzelverletzung, die für sich lebensgefährlich ist („severely traumatized patient”).
