Abstract

The current use of Total Lymphoid Irradiation (TLI) as immunosuppressive therapy for non-malignant diseases is experimental and has been utilized (1) in preparation for allogeneic organ transplantation (i.e., kidney, pancreas, etc.; 26% of radiation oncologists in the national survey would not treat), (2) in the treatment of autoimmune diseases (i.e., rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, etc.; 94% of radiation oncologists in the national survey would not treat), and (3) in the treatment of neurological disorders considered to have an immune-mediated pathogenesis (i.e., multiple sclerosis, chronic demyelinating polyneuropathy, etc.; 93% of radiation oncologists in our national survey would not treat).
