Morphologic Changes After Fractionated External Beam Therapy of Minipig Eyes

Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Radiat Oncol))

Abstract

Although radiotherapy has been employed for several decades in the treatment of the eye, radiation retinopathy and optic nerve damage are not fully understood. Clinical data are difficult to obtain because these complications occur many years after radiotherapy, and retrospective dose calculations at each area of interest are somewhat inaccurate. The injuries can be clinically significant and vision may be impaired or lost. Radiation retinopathy has been well documented clinically in a large number of reports. Anterior optic neuropathy is less well characterized (overview by Alberti 1991).
