Morphologic Changes After Iodine-125 Plaque Irradiation of Rabbit Eyes

Abstract

Radiation damage to the retina and optic nerve can result in significant impairment of visual acuity and compromise the outcome following radiation therapy of tumors within and around the eye. Radiation retinopathy is characterized by abnormalities of the retinal circulation, including capillary nonperfusion, macular edema, vessel leakage, microaneurysms, and telangiectasia (overview by Alberti 1991). It is assumed that radiation optic neuropathy (RON) is a consequence of damage to the retinal vessels. This assumption is supported by fluorescein angiographic studies. RON can cause acute bilateral or unilateral loss of visual acuity ranging from mild to severe. Radiation retinopathy and RON usually occur within 3 years after treatment; however, latency up to 15 years has been reported (Chaudhuri et al. 1981).
