Abstract

Retinoblastoma is a primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the retina, which in view of its histopathologic as well as clinical characteristics has to be regarded as a specific clinical entity (Becker and Hinton 1983). The term “retinoblastoma” dates back to 1926, when it was suggested by Verhoeff after about 100 years of confusing terminology (Verhoeff and Jackson 1926), and refers to its development from primitive precursor cells of the retina (Dunphy 1964). A “benign” variant of retinoblastoma has been described as “retinoma” or “retinocytoma”; these are highly differentiated tumors with basically no growth potential (Gallie et al. 1982; Margo et al. 1983). The term “glioma of the retina” is no longer in use in view of the current understanding of the histogenesis of this tumor.
