Abstract

Spanish medicine has shared in the changes that have characterized developments in Western medical communities since the 1930’s—the introduction of a great deal of advanced technology; increasing and irreversible collectivization of health care services; deeper appreciation and extension of the concept of individuality within the framework of scientific pathology; and prevention of disease and promotion of health (1). As a result of marked social disparities, progress has not been uniform, and major differences in health care delivery have co-existed in different regions and according to social class until recently.
