Abstract

The gross appearance of a squamous cell carcinoma in the tongue of a rat is seen in Fig. 231 and may be compared with a normal rat tongue (Fig. 232). These tumors typically occur on the dorsal posterior aspect of the base of the tongue where the semilunar groove surrounds the vallate papilla. They appear as firm, usually white, papillary or fungiform masses. These masses can partially or totally occlude the lumen of the oral cavity and oropharynx and prevent ingestion of food. Smaller lesions may be present as papillary projections from the mucosal surface.
