Abstract

Germ cell tumours in children may arise in any part of the reproductive tract or in ectopic sites determined by patterns of development in embryological life. If malignant change occurs in the germ cells, dysgerminoma, teratoma or yolk sac tumour may result. Tumours arising from nongerminal tissue may originate from cells with specialized function in the sex organs (granulosa cell and Leydig cell tumours) or from cell types found in many other tissues (e.g. lymphoma, rhabdomyosarcoma).
