Abstract
Cancer of the thyroid is a collective designation for several different histological types of malignant neoplasms varying widely in their degree of malignancy. The “Third National Cancer Survey” (1969 to 1971) showed that 64% of all thyroid tumors are papillary carcinomas, 18% follicular, 3% medullary, and 3% anaplastic. The rest are lymphomas, sarcomas, and carcinomas of other cell types. The prognosis of the papillary thyroid carcinoma is favorable. The 5-year survival rate is 80% to 90%, the 20-year survival rate about 70%. The anaplastic type, with a 5-year survival rate of only 5%, has the worst prognosis (cited in [95]). However, the incidence and mortality data do not vary with histological type. When judged overall, thyroid cancer therefore belongs to the less malignant neoplasms. The mean 5-year survival rate is given as 85%.
