Part of the book series: Topics in Current Physics ((TCPHY,volume 36))

Abstract

Monte Carlo simulations have been applied to the analysis of a variety of statistical systems and recently have been successfully extended to the study of lattice gauge theories. In the context of this book, where so much is said on Monte Carlo simulations, I need not dwell on the details of the method itself; more important for the reader are the answers to the following questions:

  1. i)

What motivates the study of a quantum field theory on a space-time lattice?

  2. ii)

How is a lattice gauge theory formulated and what is the analogy with a statistical system?

  3. iii)

What results have been achieved by Monte Carlo simulations?
