Abstract
Of the chemical compounds that make up an organism, water accounts for by far the largest fraction. About 75% of the weight of a human newborn is water; as the child develops the relative water content of the body decreases, to an average of 63% in the young man and 52% in the young woman. The percentage of water continues to decline with advancing age, reaching averages of 52% and 46%, respectively.
