Abstract
As a rule animal cells obtain energy by the oxidative breakdown of nutrients. Therefore they must continually be provided with oxygen. Moreover, if they are to function properly it is equally important that the end products of metabolism continually be removed. Chief among these is carbon dioxide. This exchange of gases between the cells and their surroundings is known as respiration.
