Abstract

In this study we make use of the following basic principles of mechanics:

  1. 1.

    If a force R acts on a body and the body is in equilibrium there must be a counter-force R1, equal and opposite to R, acting on the body (Fig. 365).

  2. 2.

    Moments in equilibrium. If a body is in equilibrium then the sum of the moments of the forces acting about any point in that body must be zero (Figs. 366, 367).
