Liver Transplantation and Impending Hepatic Failure

  • Chapter
Artificial Liver Support

Abstract

Liver transplantation may have relevance in several ways when discussed at a symposium on artificial liver support:

  1. 1.

liver transplantation in acute hepatic failure

  2. 2.

liver transplantation after a phase of artificial liver support in acute hepatic failure —in nonregenerating liver status

  3. 3.

Pretreatment of patients in chronic liver failure before transplantation

  4. 4.

Artificial liver support in post-transplant liver failure episodes

As a consequence of the present state of artificial liver support and of liver transplantation, some or even most of these aspects may be futuristic, but nevertheless they are of importance. This paper reviews several aspects of the relationship between hepatic failure/liver transplanting and artificial liver support, and considers general problems in liver grafting. Finally, results of liver grafting at our institute and our surgical approach to transplantation in a patient suffering from hepatic coma are summarized.
