Charcoal Haemoperfusion with PGI2 in the Treatment of Fulminant Hepatic Failure

  • Chapter
Artificial Liver Support

Abstract

The early results with treatment of fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) by charcoal haemoperfusion gave encouraging results and of the first 37 patients, 14 survived to leave hospital (37.8%). However, as the series continued, survival rate fell in association with an increasing frequency of hypotensive reactions during haemoperfusion. The latter were accompanied by a fall in circulating platelet numbers and the appearance of cellular aggregates in blood leaving the column, detected by rises in Swank screen filtration pressure (SFP) (Silk and Williams 1978). Electron micrographs of the Swank screen filters confirmed the presence of platelet aggregates.
