Abstract
The mechanism of hepatocellular death remains a challenging problem. It is well understood only when sudden interruption of cellular respiration, for instance by cyanide, results in instantaneous death without any morphologic alterations. Otherwise, cell death causes recognizable changes implying necrosis (Trump et al. 1974). It is then a step-like process of degeneration of the organelles. Therefore, the possibility of identifying these various steps offers one of the most promising avenues of basic research in hepatology to be applied to the management of acute and chronic liver disease.
