Abstract
Surgery on a limb should be performed whenever possible under pneumatic tourniquet control. The pneumatic tourniquet must have a gauge and should be cleaned or sprayed with an alcohol disinfectant before it is applied. Cuffs that can be sterilized are particularly recommended. To prevent the entry of disinfectant between the skin and cuff (which could cause burns), a gauze strip should be inserted to absorb excess solution. This strip is removed after disinfection is completed. The cuff can also be covered with an adhesive film or a waterproof paper towel with an adhesive edge. The cuff in inflated immediately prior to surgery.
