Combining Space-Tactical and Tissue-Tactical Procedures with Miniaturized Instruments

Abstract

The grasping and cutting of tissue as well as the injection and removal of fluid can be executed all in one cycle with special miniaturised instruments called fragmentation cannulas. These instruments are characterized by a small diameter, short travel and long aspiration path — properties which permit a variety of manipulations in the eye through very small access openings.4 The short travel of the working motions during both grasping and cutting allow the targeted structures to be approached in situ, a particularly great advantage in operations on deep-lying structures which are dangerous to bring out of the eye due to concomitant movements of adjacent tissues.5
