Abstract

Tzanck (1947) described conspicuous cytologic findings in smears from epithelial vesicles of Herpes zoster, herpes simplex, and chickenpox. These are elements of excessive size and bizarre shape. A giant nucleus or several nuclei of different size are found in the basophil granular cytoplasm, whose particular feature is loss of the normal delicate chromatin structure. It is blurred and may be the first sign of the transition of normal epithelial cells to the giant cells and giant nucleate cells demonstrated. Nucleoli are lacking. These cells are found only in the three conditions mentioned and are therefore of some diagnostic significance.
