Abstract
In 1953 Edwards et al. used a balloon catheter for intraluminal aortic occlusion to control massive intra-abdominal hemorrhage due to ruptured blood vessels. The technique developed by Fogarty et al. in 1963 to extract thrombi is based on the utilization of balloon catheters. The diagnostic possibilities of balloon occlusion of the renal artery were also recognized early (Abrams, 1971; Delin and Waverling, 1966; Haverling, 1966). The danger of thrombus formation at the tip of the catheter as well as the large external diameter of the balloon catheters prevented widespread use of this technique (Lalli et al., 1971; Wholey etal., 1970).
