Zusammenfassung
Antigene (Ag) sind Substanzen, die einer fremden Species appliziert die Bildung von Antikörpern (Ak) bei lebenden Tieren hervorrufen und die spezifisch mit solchen Ak reagieren können. Die meisten kompletten Ag sind Proteine, einige jedoch auch Polysaccharide oder Polypeptide. Die meisten Ag sind Makromoleküle mit einem Molekulargewicht von über 10000. Um als Ag wirksam sein zu können, müssen die Substanzen durch ein Tier als fremd oder nicht-eigen („not self“) erkannt werden, d. h. allgemein gesehen bilden Tiere keine Ak gegen eigene Proteine.
