2.1.1 Die Edelgase bilden die VIII. Hauptgruppe des Periodensystems (PSE).2.1.2 Sie haben eine abgeschlossene Elektronenschale (= Edelgaskonfiguration): Helium hat die s2-Konfiguration, alle anderen haben eine s2p6-Konfiguration. Aus diesem Grund liegen sie als einatomige Gase vor und sind sehr reaktionsträge. Zwischen den Atomen wirken nur van der Waals-Kräfte, s. S. 76.
