Aus Tryptophan wird durch Hydroxylierung mit Tryptophan-5-Hydroxylase 5-Hydroxytryptophan gebildet. Hemmstoff für das Enzym ist p-Chlorphenylalanin (PCPA). — Aus 5-Hydroxytryptophan wird durch Decarboxylierung mit DOPA-Decarboxylase 5-Hydroxytryptamin gebildet. 5-Hydroxytryptophan passiert noch die Blut-Hirn-Schranke; es befindet sich in therapeutischer Erprobung.
