Ein Molekül oder ein Ion, das Protonen und damit auch H+ abgibt, wird als Protonendonator, als Säure bezeichnet. Ein Anion nimmt H+ auf, dissoziiert in wäßriger Lösung, gibt dann H+ ab und wird damit zur Säure.
