Zusammenfassung
Die stürmische Entwicklung der Biologie auf molekularer Ebene und in quantitativer Hinsicht wäre ohne die umfangreiche Anwendung von stabilen und radioaktiven Isotopen nicht möglich gewesen. Falls man von radioaktiven Isotopen als Strahlungsquellen absieht, kann man die meisten Isotopenanwendungen in eine der drei Hauptgruppen einteilen:

Isotope bzw. mit Isotopen markierte Verbindungen als analytische Hilfsmittel.

2.
Isotope zur Kennzeichnung des Weges eines Atoms, einer Atomgruppe oder eines Moleküls in in vivo bzw. in vitro Systemen.

3.
Untersuchungen, die von Isotopeneffekten Gebrauch machen.
