Abstract

Surgery plays a major role in the management of children with malignant disease. Almost without exception the surgeon will become involved with these patients in order to obtain a biopsy of the tumour for diagnosis, to attempt total excision of the tumour, or finally in certain instances to perform a palliative procedure in children with inoperable tumours. Close teamwork with the paediatrician, radiotherapist and chemotherapist is essential and each patient must be discussed and assessed individually. The order in which chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery are used in a particular patient varies not only with the disease but also from one major centre to another.
