Sebaceous Glands

The human sebaceous gland and its product sebum has been intensively investigated. A great deal is known about the embryology, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology of this unique structure. Acne has not been the only stimulus for this exceptional effort. Many fascinating questions lure the researcher into a pursuit of the mysteries of this fantastic organ. That designation is not hyperbole for each cell synthesizes a lipoid product of unparalleled chemical complexity. The diversity of fatty acids is staggering, ranging in chain length from about C6 to C22 including odd and even numbered, branched and unbranched, saturated and unsaturated amounting to literally hundreds of discrete substances. Happily, biochemical Ulysseses have appeared who are wandering lustily along these metabolic pathways.
