Der Organismus kommuniziert mit seiner Umwelt über sein somatisches Nervensystem: das sensorische System empfängt und verarbeitet die Nachrichten aus ihr, und das motorische System dient der Fortbewegung in ihr. Die Prozesse im somatischen Nervensystem unterliegen großenteils dem Bewußtsein und der willkürlichen Kontrolle.
