Zusammenfassung
Die Realisierung der naheliegenden Idee Narkosemittel auf intravenösem Weg an das zentrale Nervensystem heranzubringen, war die Voraussetzung für die Entwicklung neuzeitlicher Narkosemethoden. So steht die intravenöse Narkose praktisch am Beginn des Aufbaues einer pharmakologisch überlegten und ausgewogenen Kombination verschiedener Pharmaka, die Einzelfaktoren wie Bewußtsein, Schmerz, Muskelspannung, oder vegetative Umschaltstellen und Receptoren selektiv dämpfen oder ausschalten können. Allerdings verstehen wir unter „Intravenöser Narkose“ lediglich die Applikation geeigneter Narkotica, und wir werden uns auf solche Mittel beschränken müssen. Gerade sie sind es, die vom Kranken auch heute noch als fühlbarster Fortschritt der Narkosetechnik empfunden werden.
