Unter einer Differentialgleichung versteht man eine Gleichung, in welcher unabhängige Variable, Funktionen und Ableitungen von Funktionen auftreten. Ein Beispiel ist
; hierin ist x die unabhängige Variable, y die gesuchte Funktion. Eine Lösung ist eine Funktion \( y = \phi (x) \) für welche (1) identisch in x gilt, also \( \phi '(x) + 2x \cdot \phi (x) \equiv 0 \).
