Abstract

The removal of implants after bone union is necessary (between 1½ and 2 years), not only because of possible corrosion of the metal but because implants are rigid and prevent the bone from responding to normal physiological stimuli. This is especially important in the lower limb, while implants seldom need to be removed from the humerus or forearm bones, unless they produce symptoms which is rarely the case.
