Abstract
Child/adolescent psychiatry provides diagnoses and treatment for children and adolescents suffering from psychiatric disorders and conditions. The majority of these patients have normal cognitive abilities, while others suffer mental retardation. The core group of patients have psychotic disorders, affective disorders, personality disorders, and pervasive developmental disorders (i.e., conditions similar to that of autism). Other patient groups include those with conduct disorders, emotional disorders, and somatic disorders. Child/adolescent intervention is closely connected to the patient’s family and surroundings. Community-based working methods are frequently required in the case of adolescents whose treatment methods include psycho-education, psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and environmental therapy.
