Abstract
Child and adolescent psychiatry is recognised by the governmental Department of Health as a specialty of psychiatry but the boundaries of its responsibilities are vague as far as its interface with adult psychiatry is concerned. The most usual interpretation is that it addresses pre-school and school-age children (which could take it up to the age of 19 for some children) though some services use a cut-off of age 16 which is the age at which children can legally leave school.
