Zusammenfassung

Eine Stimulation des Immunsystems durch Medikamente, im Schrifttum auch etwas ungenauer als Immunmodulation bezeichnet, dient dem Zweck einer forcierten Elimination von Antigenen aus dem Organismus. Das Immunnetzwerk im engeren Sinne - der Begriff wurde von Nils Jerne [34] geprägt - kooperiert dabei mit einer Serie von vor- und nachgeschalteten Systemen unterschiedlicher Spezifität (Abb. 1). Die Gesamtheit wird als Körperabwehr bezeichnet. Die systematische Aktivierung dieser Systeme führt zu einer typischen Entzündungsreaktion. Es kann sogar unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen, wie zum Beispiel schweren Grunderkrankungen, Vorliegen von Tumoren, Polytraumatisierung oder nach schweren Operationen, zu lebensbedrohlichen Zuständen, wie Sepsis oder Tumorentstehung kommen, wenn die Entzündungsreaktion eskaliert und die Abwehrsituation insuffizient ist oder fehlgesteuert wird.
