Quality of life with ventricular assist devices

Mechanical Circulatory Support

Abstract

In 1958, concepts and guidelines for the development of artificial hearts were presented by Akutsu et al. (1) and first attempts with temporary mechanical circulatory support to heart transplantation were made by Cooley and Liotta in 1969 (2). The first bridging to heart transplantation with left ventricular support systems took place in 1978 by Norman et al. (3). In the same year, Reemtsma et al. (4) conducted a study on bridged patients proving that the survival rate was good. Pneumatic paracorporeal ventricular assist devices were successfully used by Hill (5) and an implantable left ventricular assist device by Starnes (6) in 1984.
