Abstract
Over the past decades major progress has been made in the field of heart transplantation; with a 5-year survival rate of 65% (3), it remains the only therapy for patients with end-stage heart failure. However, the resulting increase in potential organ recipients has not been met by an equivalent increase in organ donors. As an alternative, several devices for mechanical circulatory assistance have been developed. Since the waiting time for heart transplant candidates has increased, there is the need to provide devices for prolonged support and even for permanent support.
