Abstract

Mechanical circulatory support in children with severe cardiac failure is still limited by the availability of devices capable of accommodating the wide range of flows required for pediatric support. In the United States, circulatory assistance for cardiac failure is most commonly achieved by the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenator circuit (ECMO) (2, 3, 8). The most frequent indication for circulatory support is myocardial dysfunction following cardiac surgery. There is also a growing number of children placed on ECMO for acute decompensation of a chronic cardiomyopathy or a viral myocarditis, where mechanical support is used for temporary support or as a bridge to transplantation.
