Abstract
In highly industrialized countries, every second person dies from a disease of the heart or the circulatory system and every fourth person from cancer. Accordingly, almost everyone knows a patient currently suffering from, or who has died from one of these diseases. The processes involved in coping with these illnesses can therefore be observed both in the sufferers and in healthy individuals. The scientific interest in the subject of coping with illness is documented by the relatively large number of recent publications, above all in overviews contained in standard reference works on psychosomatic illness, in special editions of journals, monographs and compilations (1, 17,24).
