Abstract

The approach chosen by Denise Pumain, in this book, to deal with the sciences of the city has been to analyse the results which can be obtained from the application of mathematical models derived from physics to the study of urban systems. She has presented a wide-ranging review of the models recently developed to describe the evolution of the city or the city system. As I am not an expert on models, my own contribution adopts a different approach. But to begin with, I should like to make some observations on the intrinsic limits of mathematical simulation models, in particular when these are applied to urban systems.
