Osteoid osteoma

  • André Mazabraud

This lesion was described by Bergstrand in 1930 and then by Milch in 1934. In 1935, Jaffe reported 5 cases and termed it osteoid osteoma. Jaffe and Lichtenstein reported 30 cases in 1940. At certain sites, osteoid oste-orna raised, and still raises, difficult problems of differentiation from osteoblastoma. The hyperalgic nature of the osteoid osteoma is related to its over-vascularity [Lindblom et al 1960] and to the presence of nerve filaments [Sherman & McFarland 1965], easier to follow in the vascular pedicle than in the tumour itself.
