Optical Instabilities in Passive Semiconductors

  • Chapter
Nonlinear Dynamics in Solids

Abstract

The nonlinear optical properties of matter and the associated phenomena of optical instabilities and of optical bistability gained increasing interest in the last years [1–12]. This evolution is based on the fact that aspects of applied research e.g. for optical data handling as well as aspects of fundamental research in the area of nonlinear dynamics can be investigated with these systems. We will concentrate in this contribution on the second point, and, to keep things easy, we will treat only a single material, CdS, and a single group of optical nonlinearities, namely the photo-thermal ones.
