Abstract
In different studies the prevalence rates of febrile convulsions varied from 0.1% to 15%, and the rates of epileptic seizures in childhood from 0.1% to 3.1% [11]. A British cohort study of 13 135 children found a cumulative incidence of 2.3% for febrile convulsions up to 5 years of age [12]. Tsuboi [11] observed a prevalence of 8.3% for febrile convulsions and 0.9% for afebrile convulsions in a cohort study of 17 044 Japanese children followed up to the age of 3 years. A 0.41% cumulative incidence of epilepsy up to 11 years of age was observed in a British study [6]. According to Hauser and Kurland [6] the prevalence of epilepsy in the age group from birth to 9 years is 0.28%.
