Plumbing the Depths of the Milky Way
This chapter deals with the determination of the distances of cosmic objects and it contains quite a number of technical details. These are necessary because anyone who wants to know whether the universe has some far distant boundary, needs to know what is meant by “far distant”. In other words, they need to have an appreciation of the distances of the stars from one another, and need to know how we try to carry our measurements out into space.
