Summary
The operation of blast furnaces is a technical process with a long historical background. Therefore, most of the perfections achieved so far have been the result of empirical research. Recently, successful attempts have been made to determine the processes inside the furnace by means of mathematical models with a view to better control the processes. A description is given of some of these efforts to visualize and make controllable processes inside the furnace by way of combining measuring techniques and model representations. The integration of these mathematical models into one controlling system is illustrated under the practical example of a large-capacity blast furnace.
